Common Networking Terms

Term Description

ACL

Access Control List (ACL) defines which user or systems have access to specific resources, such as files or network traffic, and what operations they are allowed to perform on those resources.

API Key

A secret password, used when software is authenticating during a dataflow connection step.

BSSID / MAC Address

BSSIDs are unique hardware identifiers for devices. Enterprise environments run complex mesh networks where the BSSIDs are subject to change via software control/spoofing.

MAC addresses are unique hardware identifiers for devices and will not change generally, especially not in the conditions SVLive works in. We are wanting the MAC address of the NIC on the user's device and not the WAP.

Docking Station

What you plug your laptop into to get power, connect monitors and get internet.

Environments

A controlled group of technology components, catering to a performance expectation.

Production

This is the main environment for Serraview the URL is:

  • clientname.serraview.com

UAT(User Acceptance Testing)

  • clientname.uat.serraview.com - usually running a version of the software that is a release candidate version for Production.

Firewall

A security layer, actively blocking undesirable traffic from outside the corporate network.

HTTP / HTTPS

Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) is the protocol used for the transfer do data between 2 places securely.

IP Address

Like the address of a house, IP addresses are the digital address of a device on a network. By default, this will be the public-facing IP that you can see when checking it via a website like https://ifconfig.me/

IP Whitelisting / Allow Listing

A list of IP Addresses that are trusted by Serraview. Two separate lists; one for accessing Serraview, and one for allowing activity data to be sent to (and received by) Serraview from clients. If IP Whitelisting is enabled, any devices not on this list will be blocked.

MIB

Management Information Base (MIB) is a virtual database that describes the properties of manage objects within a network.

Model

Brand and model name and specific model number of a given device (e.g. Switches or WAPs by Cisco, Aruba, Aironet, Meraki, Etc).

Network Switch

Hardware that connects multiple devices to a network via internet cables (LAN).

OID

Object Identifiers (OID) are like an addresses for objects within a network device's MIB.

Proxy

A controlled cloud server, that web traffic is routed through as it leaves the corporate network.

Service Account

A special type of account used by applications and system, rather than a person, to authenticate and access resources.

SNMP

Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a protocol used to monitor and manage devices on a network.

SOE

Standard Operating Environment (SOE) refers to a standardized setup of hardware and software that is across an organization. The SOE typically consists of the following:

  • Operating System (OS) - This is a specific version of Windows or Mac OS.
  • Pre-installed Applications - Such as SPS, Office suites, security applications.
  • Configurations - Such as network settings, security policies, user preferences.
  • Security Settings - Firewalls, group policies, user access control.

SSL

Secured Socket Layer (SSL) locks up the communication so that only the device with the correct certificate can read it.

Switch This is a hardware device that connects multiple devices (like computers, printers, and servers) on a local network.

Switchport/Datapoint

The many slots in a switch that you plug LAN cables into.

VLAN

Virtual Locale Area Network (VLAN) is a grouping of network devices that while physically located on different network segments, can be treated as if they are on the same network.

VPN

Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a method of connecting to a corporate network from outside the SOE Production environment, on-site in-office. Commonly used for WFH/remote employees.

WAP

Wireless Access Point (WAP) are sevices attached to the roof/walls to provide Wi-Fi and triangulate positions.

Wi-Fi

A technology for wireless local area networking with devices based on the IEEE 802.11 standards. Wi-Fi is a trademark of the Wi-Fi Alliance, which restricts the use of the term Wi-Fi Certified to products that successfully complete interoperability certification testing.

SVLive Terms

Term Description

Consolidated Utilization Data

Data from multiple sources e.g. wired desks, WiFi, sensors, and speedgates, grouped together in reports to derive utilization figures.

Data Stream

The flow of data from all the SVLive apps client-side, through all the components and processes, resulting in Locator, Engage of Serraview database.
Because SVLive apps generate data, and transmit that data regularly, on average - every minute or so. Zooming out, looking at all the SPS apps, on all the thousands of workstation devices, the data is said to behave like a stream.

Engage

The Serraview web app, mobile app, and kiosk that supports SVLive2 and this software as a sensor solution provides additional rich utilization data which depending on the situation, allows Engage to display Desk Availability, Employee Location, and Presence Information. Learn more in Engage with SVLive2

ETL

Extract, Transform, Load. A common software concept, for taking data stream from one source, and adjusting it to be consumed by applications down-stream.

ETL Hub

Serraview server-side component, integrating the SVLive AP activity data stream, into Serraview Engage for visualization of SVLive Activity information on the Floorplan.

Insights and Reporting

Insights analyzes your portfolio and uses industry best practices, metrics, and benchmarks to help optimize your workplaces. Learn more in Utilization Reports List for SVLive Data and Insights.

Locator

The Serraview web app module name, providing current-state Wayfinding and Heatmap info on Floorplans for end-users.

Mac Address Watcher

This is an SVLive app that only Serraview Admins need to use when wiring up desks. It can be run in the background and will watch if there are any changes to the wired MAC Address. It will automatically enter the MAC Address into the wire-up Tool.

SPS

Serraview Presence Service (SPS), the SVLive background-app installed on workstation devices.

SVLive Activity data

SVLive API takes in all the raw information from SPS and Switch Scanner, and generates “Acivity data” because each row in the Raw data (see Report 311) is a timestamped User Activity (Log in/Active/Away/Log Off) with it’s associated Username, and that activity’s Calculated Location (either Wifi location, or Wired location).

Switch Scanner

The SVLive app is installed on a client-side server, scanning switches.

WAP Pin

A pin dropped onto the floorplan, indicating the actual physical location of WAPs in the office. WAP pin locations are used when SVLive is Calculating WiFi Locations. Serraview > Spaces > Edit Floor > Choose Floor > Add > Wifi Access Point.

Wi-Fi data

Wi-Fi data is an estimation of a person's location by analyzing the signal strengths of visible access points on your corporate network in near real-time.

Wired data

Wired data (connection via data port on desk) which detects the presence of a person in a space or desk in near real-time.

Wire-up Process

The process of taking data from the Building/Floor level down to each individual desk/space by making a connection between the physical location of the desk to the switch port that services that desk. After we have wired-up, we will be able to detect activity when a person plugs into the data port and signs into their machine.

Wireup Tool

Serraview tool used to complete wiring up of the data point and the switch.

Wayfinding

Using SVLive data to locate a colleague who is in the office, so you can find your way to where they are.
