Focus the Drawing by Panning

Panning controls the portion of the drawing that AutoCAD displays by redefining the drawing’s display boundaries without changing the magnification.

When you save a drawing, you save its current pan setting. The next time you open the drawing, AutoCAD displays it at the pan setting at which the drawing was saved.

You can pan using the commands on the Ribbon's View tab, the View / Pan cascading menu, the AutoCAD scroll bars, or the commands on the right-click menu.

To pan dynamically

  • From the Ribbon, click View / Navigate / Pan . The cursor changes to a hand icon.
  • Depress the left mouse button and, keeping the button depressed, drag the hand icon in the desired direction. The drawing moves with the hand.

To pan while executing a command

You may be in the process of using a command when you realize that you need to pan the drawing. This can happen when drawing large items, like corridors or a building’s exterior wall boundary.

For example, you can run the Line command, choose the starting point of the line, right-click to call the menu, and invoke the AutoCAD Pan command. Press Esc when you are finished panning. The Line command resumes so that you can select the line’s second point.
