custodian (SDS)

The principal investigator (PI), who is authorized to possess and take responsibility for a hazardous product that has an associated SDS. For example, the lab director might be the custodian for several products stored in the lab that he or she manages.

Procedures typically call for alerting a custodian if anything is amiss with a hazardous product. For example, if an inventory survey reveals that a product is missing from its expected location, the auditor can alert the product's custodian.
