Adding Fuels
Sustainability & Risk / Green Building / Carbon Footprint - Background Data
Adding Fuels
Use the Fuels task to add Fuel Base Codes (fuel types), and specific fuels or fuel technologies for the fuels for which you want to calculate Greenhouse Gas emissions.
For fuel-based emissions factors, you define specific fuels (Fuel Name) by fuel type that you then add fuel density, heat content, carbon content, aircraft consumption, and emission factors information for.
For oxidation and emission factors, you define technologies that you then associate with emission factors for calculating methane and nitrous oxide emissions, and for oxidation factors used to calculate carbon dioxide emissions.
Defining One Emission Factor for all Fuels of a Particular Fuel Base
When defining emission factors, if you want to define one emission factor to apply to all fuels of a particular type (all fuels having the same Fuels Base Code), you would define a Fuel Name that has the same value as the Fuel Base Code. For example, for the 'N' Fuel Base Code, define a Fuel Name that is also 'N.' Then, when you assign an emissions factor and a sector for the 'N' fuel, the emission factor is assigned to all fuels having this Fuel Base Code. This eliminates the need to associate the emission factor with each Fuel Name. See Adding Emission Factors (Non-CO 2 )
Procedure: Adding Fuel Types and Fuels
To add fuels:
-
Select Carbon Footprint - Background Data / Fuels.
The Define Fuel Types and Fuels form appears.
-
To add a fuel type:
- In the Fuel Types panel, click Add New.
-
Enter the following information
Fuel Base Code: Enter a unique identifier for this type of fuel, such as 'N' for Natural Gas.
Fuel Base Name: Enter a name to identify this fuel type, such as Natural Gas.
- Click Save.
-
To add a specific fuel for a fuel type:
- In the Fuel Types panel, select a fuel type.
- In the Fuels panel, click Add New.
- Enter the following information:
-
Fuel Name: Enter a name to uniquely identify a specific fuel for the selected fuel type.
Note: If you give the Fuel Name the same value as the Fuel Base Code, you create a default for all fields having this Fuel Base Code. See Defining One Emission Factor for all Fuels of a Particular Fuel Base .
- Energy Star Fuel: If you are applying for an Energy Star rating from the Environmental Protection Agency, select the Energy Star fuel to map with this Fuel Name. Energy Star requires energy consumption data for each building, and the energy consumption is categorized by a specific list of fuels.
- Click Save.
-
To add a technology used to apply emissions or oxidation factors to all fuels of a particular type:
- Select a Fuel Type in the Fuel Types panel.
- In the Technologies panel, click Add New.
-
In the Technology for Emission/Oxidation Factors panel, enter the following:
Technology Name: Enter the name of the technology for which you want to add emissions or oxidation factors.
- Click Save.
