Adding Solid Waste Emission Factors

Use the Solid Waste factors task to add the protocols you are using for solid waste emission factors. You can then add the emission factors data by type of solid waste.

You enter both upstream and downstream emission factors:

  • Upstream emissions are emissions related to the extraction and processing of resources for manufacturing. For solid waste, upstream emissions measure consumption and industrial process emissions for raw materials acquisition and manufacturing when discarded products need to be replaced.
  • Downstream emissions are emissions resulting from managing the waste materials, such as from transporting waste, and methane emissions and water pollution from landfills.

To add solid waste emission factors information:

  1. Select Carbon Footprint - Background Data / Solid Waste Factors .

Define Solid Waste Factor Versions, Types, and Data form appears.

  2. To add the protocol you are using for solid waste emission factors:
    1. Click Add New > Solid Waste Factors Version.
    2. Enter the following information:

Version: Enter the name of the protocol version you are using for solid waste emission factors. The Version uniquely identifies this protocol version

Version Description: Enter a description for the protocol, such as the table number the data is found in, or the year the data is for.

    3. Click Save.
  3. To add upstream and downstream emission factors for different types of solid waste:
    1. Click Add New> Solid Waste Factors Type and Data.
    2. Enter the following:

Waste Name: Select the type of waste you are entering emission factors for, such as aluminum cans or office paper. You can mouse over the field to click the Show Values button to select from the existing waste name values. If this name is not unique for the factor version, you will need to edit it. You can also enter a name manually into the form. See Selecting predefined data for the primary keys for new records.

Waste Composition: Select the composition for this solid waste.

Net Emissions Units: Select the units used to measure the solid waste emission factors. By default, the units for solid waste is MTCE /Ton, but you can define different units if needed. See Defining Units.

    3. Enter the following upstream emissions as net emissions:

Raw Material Acquisition and Manufacturing for 100% Virgin Inputs

Product Manufacture Using 100% Recycled Inputs

      Forest Carbon Sequestration

Product Manufacture Using Current Mix of Recycled Inputs

    4. Enter the following downstream post-consumer net emissions:

      Landfilling

      Combustion

      Recycling

      Composite Disposal

      Composite Downstream

    5. Click Save.
