Named-User Licensing

Some sites have named-user licensing, rather than concurrent-user licensing. For named-user licensing, a customer supplies the desired number of users at time of purchase. Archibus provides a license for that number.

The system administrator follows the procedure below to assign a named-user license to each user. Named users sign in under the appropriate name – other users cannot use the assigned user name. For example, the entire Accounting department cannot sign in with the same name. Typically, sites with named-user licensing do not use the GUEST account.

To establish named-user licensing for a user:

  1. Open System / Archibus Administrator - User and Security / Add or Edit Users .
  2. Under Users , select desired user.

In the example below, ABERNATHY is selected.

  3. In the Is Named User? drop-down list under Edit User , select Yes - Named .
  4. Click Save at the upper right to save your change.

When a user signs in, the program determines whether a user account with that user name – ABERNATHY, say – already exists in memory. If so, the program:

  • Stops that user's server-side session
  • Deletes the user account object
  • Signs the user in as usual, creating a new user account object and session

This approach:

  • Keeps multiple users from sharing the same account. If they do so, one user's session ends when the next user signs in.
  • Keeps users from getting locked out if they close the browser without signing out, which keeps their server-side session running until it times out.

This approach is also useful for sites that have a small number of users and licenses. These sites often use named-user licensing so they do not need to wait for a user session to time out in order for the program to release the license. The user can simply sign in again at any time, and reclaim the named-user license.
