Tracking Carbon Footprint: Overview

The Green Building application guides you through the process of entering consumption data by associating the consumption amounts with a carbon footprint protocol. You enter consumption data by type of emissions defined by the protocol.

The carbon footprint tasks in Archibus Green Building follow the framework documented by the World Resources Institute/World Business Council for Sustainable Development's (WRI/WBCSD) GHG Protocol Corporate Standard, but your Business Process Owner can define your own fuel compositions and consumption standards through the background data definition tasks for the Carbon Footprint- Background Data process. These Help instructions follow the protocol supplied with the application.

Follow these steps to track carbon footprint at the building level. The application uses the protocol information entered in the Carbon Footprint - Background Data tasks to calculate emissions based on the consumption source data you enter.

  1. Define Footprint Scenarios : Before you enter consumption data, you define footprint scenarios that enable you to perform hypothetical analyses for different consumption scenarios, to compare emissions using different protocol versions, or to create a benchmark scenario that demonstrates your goal for emissions. See Define Footprint Scenarios.
  2. Enter building footprint details: Select a building and enter a calculation year. You then select the factor versions that you want to use for this building and year to calculate emissions. See Entering Building Footprint Details.
  3. Enter consumption data by emission type : Enter consumption data for the building and the people and processes associated with the building. You can enter Direct Emissions (Scope 1) , Indirect Emissions (Scope 2) which captures your purchased electricity, Indirect Emissions (Scope 3) , and Other Emissions. When you save the consumption values, the application calculates the emissions for this consumption activity.
  4. View Methodology : Click the Methodology button to review the calculations the application uses to generate the emissions data. For each one of the scopes and factors, the system applies the correct methodology to calculate the final emissions of kg CO 2 or metric ton carbon equivalent (MTCE). See View Methodology.
  5. Summarize Emissions: From the Building Footprint Details tab, run the Summarize Emissions action so that the application totals emissions for the Scope 1, Scope 2, Scope 3, and Other Emissions entered for the building footprint scenario and calculation year you are working with. See Summarizing Emissions .

Next Steps

Once you have entered your data and reviewed the carbon footprint for a building, you can use the Carbon Footprint - Review process to analyze your data. See Carbon Footprint - Review: Overview.
